B1: The Road to Automatic 401(k) Enrollment at No
Additional Employer Expense
The AmeriHealth Mercy Family of Companies (AmeriHealth)
and SMART will jointly discuss the steps taken to increase participation in
AmeriHealth’s 401(k) Plan (Plan) at no additional cost to AmeriHealth. By
complying with the new safe harbor provisions of the Pension Protection Act of
2006 (PPA) for automatic enrollment, AmeriHealth increases enrollment and gains
immediate relief from ADP/ACP testing. The projected cost for the higher
matching contribution is approximately the amount AmeriHealth would have
contributed to the Plan as a non-targeted QNEC correction. AmeriHealth has
approximately 2,000 eligible participants, approximately 1,926 contributing with
an average deferral percentage of 7.5%.

B3: Health Benefits: From Paternalism To Shared
Responsibility
The healthcare system in this country is broken.
David Edman will talk about the traditional approach to purchasing insurance,
which is antiquated and inefficient. It is more efficient to insure only for
serious injury and illness, and self-insure for smaller, routine expenses, which
are core principles of the Health Savings Account (HSA) model for health
insurance. Employers must shift away from the current paternalistic approach to
health care in favor of shared responsibility. HSAs work, and David Leinbach,
owner of Kaiser Construction will discuss how a consumer driven strategy was
successfully implemented at his construction company, located in Douglassville,
PA.
