PEBA's 30th Annual Forum

Thursday April 19, 2012
The Philadelphia Hilton City Avenue

Keynote Presentation:

Rich Miller

CEO, Virtua

2:45pm-3:45pm

Why did PEBA ask Rich Miller, CEO of Virtua, to be our keynote speaker? Mr. Miller led the merger of two health systems to form Virtua in 1998. Since then, he has taken the system in innovative directions by creating a values-based culture called the "Star Initiative," by adopting Six Sigma and other process improvement tools, partnering with industry leaders such as GE, and transforming a group of community-based hospitals into technologically advanced regional medical centers.

Virtua has developed into an international model for effective healthcare management and has served as host to domestic and international healthcare organizations that want to replicate Virtua's success. It has been honored twice with the New Jersey Governor's Award for Clinical Excellence and recognized with the Leadership Award for Outstanding Achievement by Voluntary Hospitals of America. For six consecutive years, Virtua has ranked as the #1 Best Employer in the Delaware Valley by its employees in the Philadelphia Business Journal’s annual survey and has earned a spot in the PBJ Hall of Fame.  In a national survey of employees from over 500 healthcare institutions, Virtua was rated #1 in Patient Care, Employee Engagement and Employee Satisfaction. Virtua is also a four-time recipient of the Consumer Choice Awards by National Research Corporation.

While developing and leading groundbreaking strategies, Miller stays close to the communities that Virtua serves. He is a board member of the March of Dimes of Southern New Jersey and served as Past Chairman of the March of Dimes WalkAmerica Campaign. He is a past member of the American Heart Association board and has served as chairman of the Arthritis Association Walk for Southern New Jersey.

As an industry leader, Miller’s efforts were recognized nationally with appointments to the Leadership Advisory Council of the Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare (CTH) and to the Governing Council of Healthcare Executives for the American Hospital Association. He served in a variety of officer positions on the Board of Trustees of the New Jersey Hospital Association culminating as chairman in 2008 and immediate past chairman in 2009. He is past chairman and lifetime member of Southern New Jersey Chamber of Commerce board and serves on the Operating Committee of the Board of Select Greater Philadelphia. He also serves on the Board of the University of the Sciences of Philadelphia. Miller has been named among The 100 Most Powerful People in New Jersey Business by NJBIZ magazine. He was also recognized on the list of “291 Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know” by Becker’s Hospital Review.

Miller has received many awards for his leadership and service to the community.  In 2011, he was named CEO of the Year by the Philadelphia Business Journal as part of their Healthcare Innovation Awards. He was named Voorhees Business Person of the Year by the Voorhees Breakfast Rotary Club for his accomplishments within the Voorhees business community. The March of Dimes recognized his dedication and commitment to the community during the 2011 Born to Shine Gala. He received the 2010 New Jersey Business Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award from New Jersey Junior Achievement. He has also received the "Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award" from the Boy Scouts of America. Miller has been named one of the 50 Most Powerful People in Health Care by NJBIZ and a "Person to Watch" by Philadelphia Magazine. He has also received national recognition as the Lean Six Sigma CEO of the Year.  He served on the Governor's Committee on Benchmarking for Quality and Efficiency, and on the NJ Healthcare Access Study Commission.

Miller is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and serves as a trustee of the National Quality Forum.  A graduate of Mount St. Mary's College, he earned his MBA from Southern Illinois University.
